In this post, we’ll provide insights necessary to navigate the complexities of a bathroom remodel to ensure your project’s success.

Bathroom Remodeling Dos

Do: Hire a Professional Design Build Firm

Bathroom Renderings and Floorplans

Hiring the right design build firm may be the most important decision you make since the multi-faceted nature of a bathroom remodel involves both design and construction with a cohesive approach. Your design build firm can:

  • Offer a streamlined and consolidated process to manage both design and construction, thus eliminating potential communication gaps that may arise if using separate designers and contractors, and enhance accountability throughout the project.
  • Bring a wealth of expertise and experience in both the aesthetic and technical aspects of bathroom design to help avoid design flaws that could lead to costly modifications during the construction process.
  • Maximize functionality and offer tailored solutions for space optimization, enhanced storage and accessibility elements, if required.
  • Minimize potential delays and miscommunications through a unified team.
  • Help you potentially avoid unforeseen expenses, and deliver value for every dollar spent, through expertise in budgeting and resource allocation.

Do: Create a Realistic Budget

Budget

A well-thought-out budget serves as your financial guide to help you stay within any budget allowances while helping to alleviate unnecessary stress or complications. A realistic budget can:

  • Set the parameters for your project so you are not enticed by design options or features that may surpass what is practical.
  • Act as a preventive measure or safety net against potential overspending when unforeseen challenges and discoveries arise.
  • Encourage a disciplined approach to decision-making, prompting you to prioritize aspects and distinguish between what’s essential and what’s desired. This ensures that critical components such as plumbing and structural improvements are addressed before allocating funds to aesthetics or non-essential features.
  • Foster effective communication and help find solutions within the budget allowance.

Do: Research Local Building Codes

Like any city, Madison, WI has specific building codes and regulations. Adhering to these codes is not merely a legal obligation, it helps ensure the safety, integrity and compliance of your bathroom renovation. Here are some of the benefits of researching the local building codes yourself:

  • Familiarization with the local building codes helps you to know the safety standards and minimize the risk of structural issues down the line. Non-compliance can result in fines, delays or even having to undo or redo aspects of your bathroom remodel, leading to unnecessary expenses and headaches.
  • Your understanding of the codes empowers you to engage in informed conversations with your design build firm, and positions you as an informed and vigilant homeowner, leading to a more collaborative and transparent working relationship.
  • Since building codes are dynamic and often revised, knowing the latest information helps you stay abreast of and adapt to any changes or updates so that your project remains compliant with the most current standards.

Do: Prioritize Functionality

Basement Bathroom Remodel

While aesthetics are what you see, functionality is what can make or break your enjoyment of your bathroom remodel. Functionality not only looks impressive, it serves practical purposes. Here’s why you should prioritize functionality:

  • A well-designed bathroom enhances efficiency and convenience. This means strategically planning the layout, optimizing storage solutions, and ensuring that fixtures and features align with your practical needs.
  • Thoughtful design minimizes wear and tear, reducing the likelihood for future repairs or renovations. Investing in durable materials and fixtures can extend the lifespan of your bathroom and offer a sound return on investment.
  • Resale value of your home rises when bathrooms are well-organized, efficient and tailored to the various needs and uses.
  • A well-designed bathroom seamlessly integrates functionality and aesthetics through thoughtful placement of fixtures, smart storage, and efficient use of space.

Do: Invest in Quality Materials

Primary Bathroom Vanity Remodel

Making the choice for high-quality or premium materials during a bathroom remodel can yield numerous benefits while contributing to the project’s overall success and longevity.

  • Since bathrooms are exposed to high levels of moisture, temperature fluctuations and frequent use, investing in high-quality materials like moisture-resistant tiles, durable countertops and robust cabinetry can help your components withstand the daily rigors, minimizing the need for early replacements or repairs.
  • Quality materials enhance the overall aesthetics and visual appeal with superior finishes, textures and color retention. While the initial investment may be higher, the long-term enjoyment more than pays off.
  • High-quality materials are often designed with practicality in mind, offering easy maintenance, and enhanced stain and wear resistance.
  • Eco-friendly options are often available.
  • Potential buyers often prioritize homes with premium bathrooms, potentially increasing your home’s resale value and attractiveness to future buyers.

Do: Consider Aging in Place Features

Sun-Prairie-WI-Home-Addition-Bathroom-2

Let’s face it, we’re all getting older. While you’re planning your bathroom renovation, consider how you will use, or need to use, your space in the future. Adding aging in place features now can:

  • Reduce the risk of slips and falls with the addition of grab bars, non-slip flooring and curbless showers.
  • Create a more inclusive living environment, with wider doorways, wheelchair-accessible sinks and walk-in or roll-in showers accommodating individuals with mobility challenges. This can appeal to multi-generational households or individuals with temporary disabilities, making the bathroom a universally accessible space.
  • Be a cost-effective long-term investment by preemptively addressing potential future needs, helping you avoid costly retrofits and future disruptions for aging in place adaptations down the line.
  • Increase your market appeal, especially with the aging demographic.

Bathroom Remodeling Don’ts

Don’t: Rush the Design Process

Shopping for Tile

Trying to rush the design process is a common pitfall. Your design phase lays the foundation for the entire project, so take your time in making decisions here.

  • Engage in comprehensive planning with well-thought-out considerations of spatial layout, fixture placement and materials choices. Rushing may lead to oversights or hasty decisions.
  • Explore design options and refine your vision. Look at color schemes, styles and personal aesthetic preferences, and avoid fleeting trends.
  • Collaborate with the design build professionals with open and detailed discussions to address your vision, budget and potential challenges.
  • Carefully consider your budget to establish realistic financial parameters.

Don’t: Neglect Ventilation

Bathroom Vent

Adequate bathroom ventilation isn’t a luxury, it’s a fundamental component that plays a role in maintaining the health, durability and comfort of your bathroom environment. Proper ventilation can:

  • Prevent mold and mildew from moisture accumulation.
  • Preserve the structural integrity since unchecked excess moisture can permeate walls, ceilings and fixtures, potentially causing deterioration, rot and damage to building materials.
  • Contribute to the overall comfort by eliminating odors, dissipating steam and helping to maintain a fresh environment.
  • Improve indoor air quality by eliminating pollutants and airborne particles that can lead to potential respiratory issues and discomfort.

Don’t: Forget About Storage

Madison-WI-Transitional-Bathroom-Remodel-CabinetsProper storage enhances the overall functionality and daily convenience, and helps eliminate the clutter and challenges of a less organized space. Well-thought-out storage solutions can:

  • Enhance visual appeal and practicality with a neat and organized bathroom environment.
  • Maximize available space, making the most of every square inch.
  • Keep supplies like towels, toiletries and cleaning supplies easily accessible and properly stored.
  • Adapt to the household’s evolving needs for storage requirements.

Don’t: Overlook Energy Efficiency

Look for energy efficient features that can contribute to the overall efficiency and functionality of your remodeled bathroom, along with cost savings and environmental responsibility. Ideas include:

  • LED lighting or CFL bulbs that can provide bright and natural illumination while consuming less electricity.
  • Water and energy conservation features like low-flow toilets and water-saving faucets.
  • Features that qualify for incentives, rebates or tax credits offered by local or federal programs.

Don’t: Ignore Future Maintenance Requirements

Condo Bathroom Vanity RemodelDuring the design process, you’ll want to consider a practical and strategic approach to the long-term maintenance needs of any bathroom. Here’s why:

  • Bathrooms are subject to daily wear and tear and poorly-chosen fixtures may deteriorate more rapidly.
  • Incorporating future maintenance needs leads to a more cost-effective and efficient bathroom. Some materials and fixtures may require specialized care of more frequent maintenance to retain their appearance and functionality.
  • Investing in low-maintenance materials and fixtures can minimize the time and effort required for upkeep.
  • Understanding the maintenance requirements helps homeowners develop a maintenance routine that preserves the beauty and functionality of their bathrooms.

Mastering Kitchen and Bath Design with Cambria Surfaces https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/mastering-kitchen-and-bath-design-with-cambria-surfaces/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/mastering-kitchen-and-bath-design-with-cambria-surfaces/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2023 01:26:43 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=7184 Contributor: Cambria (https://www.cambriausa.com/)

Kitchens and bathrooms are the most essential rooms in our homes. They play a crucial role in how we live our lives, providing comfort, functional efficiency, and a touch of luxury to our daily routines.

That’s why at Sweeney Design Remodel, we take pride in collaborating with the very best kitchen and bath professionals, especially the experts at Cambria Quartz Surfaces. Together, we blend our innovative design skills with Cambria’s superior quartz products and premium surfaces to create spaces that are both beautiful and exceptionally functional.

This seamless partnership guarantees our clients receive creative and well-designed spaces that deliver guaranteed durability and long-lasting elegance.

Understanding Kitchen Design

Traditional Kitchen Condo Remodel

Strong kitchen design hinges on achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetics. A well-designed kitchen is more than just a cooking area. Nowadays, it’s very much the heart of the home where families gather at different times of the day and to where guests are invited.

When designing a functional kitchen layout, it’s essential to consider the flow of movement, ensuring ease of access to appliances, storage, and work areas. This design should cater to both the practical needs of cooking and the modern social aspects of the food prep environment.

Integrating aesthetic and practical elements is essential. This fusion means selecting materials and finishes that are pleasing to the eye as well as durable and easy to maintain. The color palette, texture, and lighting should create a welcoming atmosphere while reflecting the homeowner’s personal style.

Innovative storage solutions are crucial in maximizing space and maintaining an organized and uncluttered kitchen. This includes cleverly designed cabinets, pull-out drawers, and multi-functional islands offering additional storage and workspaces.

Elevating Bath Design

Primary Bathroom Vanity Remodel

Similar principles also apply to bathroom design but with some differences. A bathroom is a space that is not just functional but also a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. A spa-like atmosphere is a popular request among Madison homeowners and can be achieved through the thoughtful integration of luxurious fixtures, calming color palettes, and high-quality materials.

Incorporating luxurious fixtures such as rainfall showerheads, deep soaking tubs, and elegant vanity sinks plays a significant role in elevating the space into what one might describe as a personal retreat.

Material choice is another critical aspect. Using natural stone, high-quality ceramics, or glass adds a touch of sophistication and durability to the bathroom. These materials and a cohesive color scheme contribute to the overall serene and luxurious feel.

Maximizing space without compromising style is essential as well, especially in bathrooms with limited square footage. Professional designers can achieve this through smart layout planning, innovative storage solutions like floating shelves or recessed cabinets, and the strategic use of mirrors to create an illusion of more space.

Crafted in a state-of-the-art facility in Minnesota, Cambria quartz is a symbol of superior clarity, natural hardness, and vibrant beauty. These surfaces are designed to resist scratches and chips while their non-absorbent nature means spills are temporary rather than permanent stains.

All of these qualities, combined with the absence of a need for sealing, make Cambria an ideal choice for kitchen and bath spaces.

Countertop Options for kitchen and bath designs

Cambria products come in an extensive design palette that complements various materials, tones, and finishes. For you, this means a seamless integration with any cabinetry, décor, and fixture choices you desire. Exploring unique design possibilities with Cambria

In the world of color trends, we observe the emergence of white chocolate and chocolate brown, complemented by sienna, clay, aborigine, dusty blues, and an array of green shades, acting as versatile neutral accents.

Rounded corners, once a feature in furniture, are now making their way into kitchen islands and cabinets, adding softness to the overall look and feel of the space.

Texture is taking center stage in hard surfaces and textiles, as the trend leans towards layering textures in design. A single design can manifest in multiple finishes and fabrication details, providing a customizable and elevated aesthetic for any home.

In every kitchen and bath, creates enduring luxury that complements any homeowners’ lavishly lived-in lifestyle.

Case Studies: Inspiring Kitchen and Bath Designs

Mastering Kitchen and Bath Design with Cambria Surfaces

Our team at Sweeney Design Remodel has collaborated on numerous projects with Cambria, including one in a ranch-style home in Verona, WI. Here the homeowners wanted to modernize their home, which had a dated, traditional closed floor plan.

Fundamental changes included opening up the kitchen/dining area into the living room, replacing a peninsula with an island, and installing new cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and consistent flooring across the main living areas.

The remodel also featured revamped bathrooms with updated fixtures and finishes, and the addition of new skylights, railings, and consistent red oak hardwood flooring. The result was a bright, open, and airy space, ideal for everyday living and entertaining.

The slabs used in this home remodel included a beautiful pure natural quartz design called Berwyn, which is from Cambria’s Signature series.

ironsbridge waterfall granite bath remodel

Cambria ironsbridge waterfall granite bath remodelIn another project in the Village of Shorewood Hills, our clients sought a stylish upgrade for their primary bathroom that matched the finishes in their home in North Carolina. The transformation included incorporating a “modified” wet room/area that seamlessly blended the tub and shower.

We skillfully sloped the shower floor towards a linear drain, cohesively placing a free-standing tub within the same space. The placement and dimensions of the fixtures mirrored the original layout. Notably, the updated vanity retained the same location but was elevated with a wall-hung design, featuring a stunning Ironsbridge™ waterfall granite countertop from Cambria’s Luxury series.

Choosing the Right Countertops for Your Madison Kitchen Remodel https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/choosing-the-right-countertops-for-your-madison-kitchen-remodel/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/choosing-the-right-countertops-for-your-madison-kitchen-remodel/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2023 19:06:56 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=7084 Countertops aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re the workhorses of your kitchen. Whether you’re whipping up a gourmet meal, hosting a family get-together, or simply preparing daily snacks, the surface you choose plays an influential role.

It’s more than just selecting a beautiful slab—it’s about functionality, durability, and aligning with your lifestyle. This article will help you explore the different options available so you can identify the perfect countertop for your Madison kitchen remodel.

Key Questions to Ask Yourself When Selecting Kitchen Countertops

But before looking at the different materials and their pros and cons, here are some initial questions to consider that will help you in your decision-making.

home-gallery-slider-kitchen2-1920w

How will you use your countertops?

Your countertop’s primary function depends on your regular kitchen activities. If you have a family with children, especially teens, the countertops you choose will likely endure constant use – from everyday family meals and frequent snack preparation to coffee chats and dinner parties.

It’s therefore important to consider both aesthetics and practicality when choosing a countertop material. Rigorous daily use will require durability and resistance to food stains, heat, and scratches.

How much maintenance/upkeep can you handle?

Countertop maintenance can range from minimal intervention to periodic treatments that take time, effort, and sometimes money. While some materials are highly resilient to daily wear and tear, others require consistent care.

Porous surfaces like marble, limestone, and granite often demand yearly sealing to preserve their beauty. Wood countertops, for instance, might need semi-annual treatments with specialist oils.

It’s essential to bear these requirements in mind when selecting materials. With careful planning, you can strike a balance between upkeep demands and the aesthetics you’re looking to enjoy.

What are your kitchen requirements?

When planning your new kitchen counterspace, it’s crucial to understand the space you have available. A good place to start is by determining the linear feet of the countertop you’ll need, noting any non-standard dimensions specific to your kitchen’s layout.

These details allow you to gauge approximate costs for different materials. When it comes to design and budget, you might think about ways to mix and match materials. For example, an island might feature a wood top that would contrast beautifully with marble or granite countertops elsewhere in the kitchen.

What’s your budget?

Kitchen countertops are available at a wide range of prices, from a modest $22 per square foot for basic laminate to a lavish $250 for premium marble or granite. However, when choosing, it’s usually best to focus on the countertop’s potential longevity.

A cheaper material might not hold up so well to general wear than a more expensive alternative, which won’t be as cost-effective in the long term. A superior butchers block might surpass the price of entry-level granite, so it’s also important to judge durability and quality based on each individual product.

What is your design aesthetic?

Your personal design preferences and those of your family play a significant role in your countertop decisions. As already mentioned, balancing both practicality and aesthetics is essential when choosing suitable materials, especially in such a functional and often-used environment.

For example, if you love red wine and have your heart set on white Carrara marble, you might be hesitant about potential red wine stains. In this instance, alternatives like Quartzite offer comparable beauty, durability, and low maintenance at a more affordable price point.

The material you ultimately choose depends on how you intend to use the kitchen as much as on the countertop’s visual appeal.

Popular Kitchen Countertop Materials and their Pros and Cons

Now let’s look in more detail at some of the most popular kitchen countertop materials and their benefits and drawbacks.

Quartz

A blend of natural quartz and resin, quartz countertops are both stylish and resilient. They’re non-porous, which means they are resistant to stains without needing sealing. With a consistent appearance, they’re less varied than natural stones, but their engineered nature offers a broad design palette. While tough against scratches, they can be pricey.

Condo Kitchen and Dining Area Remodel

Quartzite and other Natural Stone

Quartzite is a hard metamorphic rock with an undeniable natural charm and beauty. It’s highly resistant to heat and scratches but does require sealing to prevent stains. While durable, it can be costly. Other natural stones like soapstone and limestone offer unique aesthetics but vary in maintenance and durability.

Granite

Granite countertops exude luxury and longevity. As a natural stone, each slab boasts a unique pattern, adding character to your kitchen. Its hard surface resists scratches, and when sealed properly, it’s impervious to most stains. While it’s a pricier option, its visual appeal and long lifespan justify the investment for many homeowners. With a plethora of color options, it can fit various design aesthetics.

Verona-WI-Traditional-Kitchen-Remodel-Side

Marble

Cherished for its unique veining and luminous appearance, marble has become a hallmark of luxury. However, marble is naturally porous, making it prone to stains, especially from acidic substances. Regular sealing is essential to preserve its pristine look, but even then, it remains vulnerable to etching. While marble requires dedicated care and attention, its unparalleled elegance makes it a popular countertop choice.

Kitchen Remodel

Butchers Block

Butchers block countertops bring a warm, rustic charm to kitchens, adding a tactile quality that’s both functional and visually appealing. Made from various wood pieces bonded together, they offer a resilient surface for direct chopping and food preparation. Regular maintenance, such as oiling, is necessary to prevent drying and cracking. You can also sand down the surface to remove scratches.

Open Concept Kitchen

Concrete

Bespoke and versatile, concrete can be tailored in shape, color, and finish to match a desired kitchen design scheme. While heat-resistant, concrete is porous, which means it needs regular sealing to prevent stains and moisture damage. Over time, minor cracks may appear. With proper care, it can serve as a sleek and durable statement piece in a variety of kitchen styles.

Porcelain

Porcelain countertops offer a blend of elegance and resilience. Manufactured from refined clay fired at high temperatures, they provide an ultra-durable surface resistance to scratches, UV rays, staining, bacterial growth, and heat. Available in an array of colors, designs, and finishes, porcelain can emulate natural stone, wood, or even cement finishes. One drawback is that heavy impacts can chip the material.

Kitchen Remodel

Laminate

Laminate countertops, often associated with brands like Formica, offer a budget-friendly option with a vast range of designs and patterns. Though they’ve sometimes been viewed as less upscale, modern laminates have evolved to mimic the appearance of stone, wood, and other natural materials. They’re durable, easy to clean, and resistant to stains, but they can be susceptible to heat and sharp objects.

Undecided which countertop material is best for your home kitchen? That’s where our team of kitchen design experts can help you.

Feeling the Madison Housing Crunch? Why Remodeling or Building an Addition May Be Your Best Solution https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/feeling-the-madison-housing-crunch-why-remodeling-or-building-an-addition-may-be-your-best-solution/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/feeling-the-madison-housing-crunch-why-remodeling-or-building-an-addition-may-be-your-best-solution/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2023 20:05:26 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=6989 Madison is currently facing a housing crunch due to a shortage of housing units in the city and surrounding areas. This shortage is driving up housing costs and making it difficult for people to find affordable housing. Several factors have led to this crisis, including rising interest rates, population growth, and slow building, among other things.

It’s likely to take some time for this crisis to end. If you’re feeling the effects of this housing crunch, here’s why remodeling or building an addition to your home may be the best alternative to relocating.

To Move or Stay?

Home For Sale

For Madison homeowners, this tumultuous housing climate is making many consider whether it’s wise to move home or instead to stay put. If you already live in the city, you’re likely feeling the pinch of the housing crunch. The limited inventory of available homes coupled with sky-high interest rates makes the prospect of relocating daunting.

Mortgage rates nationwide have scaled to a 21-year high, now standing at 7.09% from 5.13% just a year before. This rate hike means you’re potentially looking at a significantly larger monthly payment even if the house’s selling price hasn’t changed.

But what exactly is fueling these rates? The Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates to combat inflation plays a significant role. While indirectly related, this move increases the banks’ lending cost to consumers, which subsequently hikes up mortgage rates.

Things are exacerbated further by the persistent and growing demand for homes due to factors such as low unemployment, wage growth, the area’s natural beauty, and the city’s vibrant culture.

All this leaves homeowners with a dilemma. Do you take the risk and dive into this turbulent local housing market to try and find your perfect forever home, or stay put and refurbish? For many Madison residents, it’s a choice loaded with both financial and emotional implications.

Why Reinvesting in Your Home May Be the Perfect Solution

high mortgage rates

In today’s housing market, it can be wise to stay put and create the perfect home within the property you already own. Remodeling often comes out as the preferred option in the sell or renovate debate, especially with mortgage rates as high as they are.

High mortgage rates make the process of buying a new home not only daunting mentally, emotionally, and physically but also less financially viable. These high rates, influenced by the Federal Reserve’s measures against inflation, have also led to a slump in home sales, leading to a further reason to settle for a current mortgage rate and renovate rather than relocate.

The last few years have also seen homeowners in Wisconsin and throughout the US amass near-record levels of home equity. With this financial cushion, many are opting to draw from home equity loans or Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs) to fund renovations while preserving the low rate on their existing mortgage.

Homes are also getting older. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), nearly half of owner-occupied homes were built before 1980, with a third of these being constructed before 1970. As one might expect, an aging housing stock signals the need for updates and modernization, especially as architectural tastes evolve and modern smart technology becomes widespread.

Have Lifestyle Changes Prompted Your Need to Move? Why Remodeling May Be the Better Option

new baby, small home

As our lives change over the years, we often consider relocating due to a growing family or new lifestyle preferences. However, if you’re seriously considering moving, it’s also worth considering the benefits of remodeling. One core benefit of modifying your existing home is cost. As we’ve explored, remodeling can be significantly cheaper than the financial and emotional cost of buying a new home, especially in the current market.

A great renovation, including a new addition, can make your current home feel brand new and more expansive. Remodeling also allows you to customize your home to your exact needs and tastes. Rather than adapting to the design of a new property, you tailor your current home to your desired look and functionality, ensuring that every corner resonates with your personal style.

This bespoke approach not only injects renewed love into familiar spaces but can also significantly boost property value. Improvements such as hardwood floor refinishing or insulation upgrades go a long way to increasing the overall value of your property.

Furthermore, embracing renovations means the potential to access money-saving energy credits. This contributes to a reduction in renovation costs and champions a greener, more sustainable living environment.

Need More Space? Reinvest in Your Home with a Home Addition

Sun Prairie, WI home addition exterior remodel

As Madison faces increased housing demand, many homeowners have been grappling with space constraints in their current homes. This problem of space is one of the reasons why families seriously consider relocating. However, recent reforms to Madison’s zoning laws now make it simpler than ever to add an addition or construct an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) with reduced bureaucratic hurdles.

In whatever form they take, additions are an investment with several rewards. You get to enhance and increase your living space, such as turning a modest bedroom into a luxurious primary bedroom suite. Plus, quality additions can significantly boost the market value of your home when it comes time to sell.

Given the significance of a well-planned and realized home addition, seeking out the craftsmanship and skill of a qualified design-build remodeling team is crucial. Choose a firm with a proven track record and happy clients who will be by your side from the initial design phase right through to project completion.

Designing a Curbless Shower: Key Considerations https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/designing-a-curbless-shower-key-considerations/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/designing-a-curbless-shower-key-considerations/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2023 19:22:36 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=6960 When you consider a combination of aesthetics, functional elegance and accessibility in your bathroom, a well-crafted curbless shower should be on your wish list. Creating a seamless and open space while prioritizing safety and comfort, a curbless shower is a modern choice that can enhance the overall value of your home. In this post, we’ll look at some of the key considerations for designing your ideal curbless shower.

What is the Difference Between a Curbless Shower and a Traditional Walk-in Shower?

Modern bathroom with accessible, curbless shower and freestanding tub  Shower Remodel

While a traditional walk-in shower and a curbless shower both provide a level of accessibility and design, they have distinct characteristics that influence their functionality, aesthetics and overall user experience.

A curbless shower, as the name suggests, lacks a raised curb or threshold at its entrance, offering a seamless transition between the shower floor and the bathroom floor. This provides a visually-open, contemporary appearance and enables accessibility, making it an ideal choice for individuals with limited mobility.

A traditional walk-in shower features a low curb or threshold separating the shower area from the rest of the bathroom floor. This helps contain water within the shower space to prevent it flowing onto the bathroom floor. The presence of this curb may require stepping over it, making it slightly less convenient for those with mobility concerns.

What are the Benefits of Choosing a Curbless Shower?

Universal Accessibility

The primary advantage of a curbless shower lies in its universal accessibility. It eliminates the traditional raised threshold or curb, allowing for seamless entry without barriers. This enables easy and safe access for people of all abilities or those wishing to age in place by reducing the risk of tripping. The enhanced accessibility is particularly valuable for those looking to age in place, as it minimizes obstacles and allows for greater independence.

A curbless shower is adaptable for various lifestyles to enhance convenience for all age groups. In addition, it offers ample space for caregivers or assistants to provide support if needed.

Modern Ambiance

The modern design of a curbless shower lends an air of luxury and sophistication to a bathroom, while the absence of a visual barrier creates a spacious ambiance that can evoke a feeling of tranquility and relaxation, turning the daily shower into a rejuvenating experience.

In addition, the seamless transition between the bathroom floor into the shower creates a sense of openness and continuity, especially in smaller bathrooms where physical barriers can fragment the space.

Streamlined Maintenance

Because of its design simplicity, a curbless shower streamlines maintenance and cleaning efforts. There is no curb to trap debris and soap scum. The elimination of a curb also simplifies the installation of larger-format tiles that minimize hard-to-clean grout lines which require frequent upkeep.

Design Flexibility

A curbless shower’s design adds an open feel to the bathroom and can suit various bathroom configurations, adapting to both spacious layouts and smaller areas where space optimization is important. It can provide a cohesive appearance regardless of space constraints. The sleek design eliminates the need for a door or curtain and allows other features of the shower to create a stunning focal point, like a designer tile.

Are There Drawbacks to Choosing a Curbless Shower over a Traditional Curbed Shower?

While a curbless shower has its benefits, it is necessary to weight the advantages against the potential drawbacks.

Water Containment

Unlike a traditional curbed shower, a curbless design allows water to spread more freely. This can lead to water splashing onto the bathroom floor. Extra caution and maintenance may be required for safety.

Shower with privacy frosted glassPrivacy

Without a door or curtain, the open layout might feel less private. If privacy is a concern, creative solutions like frosted glass panels or half-wall dividers can help, while preserving the open ambiance.

Expense

A curbless shower can be more expensive than a traditional curbed shower. Modifications to framing, plumbing and drainage must be addressed to accommodate the unique design.

Temperature

The lack of a full enclosure might lead to a perception of a “colder” shower, especially in chillier environments. Comfort can be mitigated by installing heated floors beneath the shower area.

Not all Spaces Work

Not all spaces are suitable for a curbless shower bathroom design. The requirement that the drain be set lower than the bathroom floor can present a challenge in some settings, such as in a condominium where structural limitations may make this design unfeasible.

Complex Transitions

Achieving a seamless transition between the entry hall, bathroom floor and the shower itself can be complex. Attention to detail is crucial. It is important to collaborate with an experienced remodeler to ensure a cohesive design that doesn’t compromise functionality.

Design Considerations for Your Curbless Shower

Designing the ideal curbless shower requires careful attention to a range of considerations. By thoughtfully addressing these, homeowners can achieve a successful outcome that aligns with their design vision.

Proper Installation

A professional remodeler can ensure that the waterproofing, slope and drainage are executed perfectly to prevent water-related issues over time.

Shower TileTile Choice

Tile choices include size, material type, durability and maintenance. Tiles with a slip-resistant surface can help maintain safety while minimizing the risk of accidents. Larger tiles reduce grout lines for visual appeal and ease of cleaning. Because the shower is used often, materials that can withstand moisture and wear over time should be considered.

Drain Selection

When choosing a drain, a linear or centrally-located floor drain can complement the design while efficiently evacuating water.

Enclosures

Glass enclosures enhance both the visual and functional aspects of a curbless shower, and prevent water from escaping. Consider either clear glass or various transparency levels that can provide privacy while allowing light to permeate the space.

Showerhead

The placement of the showerhead is a practical curbless shower design detail that can affect the overall user experience. Strategic placement ensures optimal water coverage and minimizes splashing. Consider user height, spray angle, adjustability, and the desire for multiple showerheads to ensure a comfortable and functional experience.

Seating

A well-positioned bench or seat can provide a place for comfortable grooming or convenient relaxation while ensuring that the shower’s design remains functional and uncluttered.

Primary Bathroom Remodel Shower Niches

Niches

Curbless shower design details like installing niches for storing and accessing shower essentials eliminates the need for hanging caddies or storage units. This preserves the clean design lines while offering convenience.

Ventilation

An open, spacious shower requires adequate ventilation to prevent moisture accumulation that can lead to mold or mildew growth.

Remodeling? Consider These Design Choices to Maximize Organization in Your Home https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/remodeling-consider-these-design-choices-to-maximize-organization-in-your-home/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/remodeling-consider-these-design-choices-to-maximize-organization-in-your-home/#respond Fri, 04 Aug 2023 05:00:03 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=6923 Keeping your home tidy and organized can feel like a lofty ambition, especially if you have children in the house. But with a well-planned remodel, you can significantly improve your home’s organization and functionality, making your daily life easier and more efficient.

This article looks at the important design decisions to consider when maximizing the space throughout your Madison, WI home and how functionality and beauty can be seamlessly combined to enhance your everyday living.

Key Questions to Ask Yourself

Remodeling affords opportunities to create spaces that best reflect your family’s lifestyle and needs. Some questions to ask in the design stage of your home remodel include the following:

  1. How do you use your spaces?

a family having meal in the kitchenReflect on your daily routines and how you utilize each room in your home. These insights will significantly influence your design choices. If you regularly love cooking for visiting guests, ample kitchen storage will be a priority.

Similarly, if you often work from home, a dedicated home office room or area will require features that support concentration, comfort, quiet, and good posture.

  1. How many people will be using your storage spaces?

Consider the number of people in your household and how they use individual spaces throughout your property to store items. Particular areas of note when it comes to storage requirements include kitchen pantries, playrooms, and mudrooms.

The primary bedroom also needs plenty of storage space that suits you and your partner, including your unique individual needs and preferences. Make sure your remodel plan accommodates everyone, with room for growth.

  1. Will your needs change in the future?ADA Compliant Bathroom

An effective remodel takes into account potential changes in both the near and long-term future. Consider how your family situation might change, over time, including new and growing children, adult children leaving home, and aging parents. How might your home be adapted?

Try to work with designers who understand Universal Design Principles, where spaces are designed to make them accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

  1. How can you make spaces more functional?

A well-designed home that’s aesthetically pleasing and accessible is one where every feature serves a useful purpose. If a nook, cupboard, corner, or fireplace is rarely used, work with your designer to identify how to make the space more functional.

By making better use of neglected spaces, you can quickly and effectively maximize organization throughout your Madison home.

Active vs. Passive Zones

Understanding the distinction between active and passive zones in your home is fundamental when planning your upcoming remodeling project.

Madison-WI-Transitional-Kitchen-and-Mudroom-Addition-Mudroom-CabinetsActive Zones are the areas you use frequently and often touch or pass. Such areas include the kitchen, bathroom, and entryway. These spaces require careful planning to accommodate daily activities and provide easy access to essential items.

Consider incorporating a well-organized mudroom in your entryway, complete with hooks for coats, cubbies for shoes, and baskets for miscellaneous items. Similarly, a large pantry in the kitchen with custom features like pull-out shelves, spice racks, and labeled containers can make meal prep and grocery storage a lot easier.

Basement RemodelPassive Zones are the less frequently used areas in your home. Such spaces include the basement, garage, guest room, and cupboards and drawers you rarely access.

These spaces are perfect for storing items you use less frequently or seasonally. Examples include high shelves in your closets for off-season clothing, a corner in your garage for holiday decorations, or basement storage for sports gear and camping equipment.

Being mindful of these different zones helps you to successfully ensure every item in your home has a designated place best suited to its frequency of use and importance.

Custom Built-Ins Do Double Duty

Custom Storage

Few things in home interior design are more functional than custom built-in cabinets and shelves. They help you effectively organize any space while adding style and personality.

Built-ins make the most of every square inch of your Dane County home, maximizing vertical space and increasing storage. They eliminate the need for bulky furniture, making rooms more open and spacious.

These amazing organizational features include built-in bookshelves in your living room or study, a window seat with storage in the bedroom, or a custom entertainment center in the family room.

By their very nature, custom built-ins are highly adaptable. They can be designed to fit your exact needs and preferences, whether it’s specific dimensions to accommodate your book collection, flat screen television, or a hidden drawer for your valuables.

In kitchens, a custom pull-out pantry, built-in spice racks, or appliance garages can reduce countertop clutter and make your kitchen more efficient. While in your bathroom, built-in cabinets or shelves can neatly house toiletries, towels, and other necessities.

More Design Choices with Organization in Mind

Custom Corner Pull OutsEnhancing organization during a remodel involves intelligent design choices throughout your home.

A well-organized kitchen revolves around efficient cabinetry. Opt for custom cabinets with built-in organizers, pull-out shelves, and optimized corners to ensure every inch is utilized. For more inspiration, check out these kitchen organization ideas.

Make the most of your bathroom by incorporating niches in both the shower and by the vanity. These built-in storage spaces can elegantly house toiletries and bath essentials, so they always remain close to hand.

In your laundry room, consider practical design choices like rods for drying clothes, foldaway tables for folding, and designated spots for laundry detergents and other supplies.

If you’re a pet owner, consider designing a dedicated space for your furry friends. A wash and storage station for your pup, for example. Or maybe a feeding station with storage for food and accessories that will keep pet-related clutter out of sight.

Your trusted design-build remodeling team will help you analyze ways to make and keep your dream home meticulously organized.

Don’t Delay Home Improvements for Your Madison Home – Here’s Why https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/dont-delay-home-improvements-for-your-madison-home/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/dont-delay-home-improvements-for-your-madison-home/#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2023 16:33:06 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=6828 In a city like Madison, where older homes are rich with character and history, routine improvements are vital to maintaining their charm and value. Unfortunately, a myriad of reasons, from costs to lack of time, can cause homeowners to delay these necessary updates.

However, such delays can have serious implications on your property’s worth, health, and appeal. In this article, we explore why postponing improvements can be detrimental and highlight some of the key areas of your home where you should consider prioritizing updates.

Reasons Why Homeowners Are Choosing to Delay Home Improvements

High cost of home repairs

Many of the reasons homeowners are opting to delay home improvements revolve around financial concerns and resource shortages. A survey of 1,000 American homeowners highlighted that the typical home requires around $3,150 in pending repairs and improvements, a daunting figure surpassing three times the median mortgage payment in 2019.

The overall cost of improvements heads the list of reasons for avoidance, with 86% of homeowners identifying financial constraints as the main deterrent. Rising costs also play a significant role, with one-third of homeowners putting off improvements due to escalating expenses.

Materials and labor shortages, fueled by inflation, further discourage homeowners from embarking on home improvement projects. A study by Hippo Insurance showed 43% of homeowners postponed planned home updates due to these issues. These figures show hesitancy in making large purchases due to soaring prices.

Other reasons include prioritizing personal issues, lack of time, uncertainty about how to finance or tackle the improvements, and delays related to Do-It-Yourself efforts.

Why it’s Important to Push Ahead with Home Improvements

Now Hiring

The current global landscape has presented homeowners with unique challenges when undertaking home improvements. Between persistent labor and supply chain disruptions and rising remodeling costs, there’s an undeniable impact on home improvement projects. Yet, despite these challenges, pausing on home improvements may not be the best approach for various reasons.

For one, these labor shortages and supply disruptions will likely continue for the foreseeable future. Therefore, if you can be flexible, it’s advisable not to delay your project. This might mean considering alternative materials or adjusting project timelines to accommodate unexpected delays or shortages.

Financial planning also plays a crucial role in this process. To mitigate the impact of escalating costs, consider budgeting for basic repairs and saving for more extensive home improvements. You can strategize your renovation enhancements, focusing first on necessary upgrades and gradually moving to less urgent projects as funds permit.

If you plan on selling your home, unaddressed repairs or incomplete upgrades could negatively impact your home’s sale price or the duration it stays on the market. Potential buyers tend to look for move-in-ready and updated homes, so unfinished improvements could deter them.

Additionally, complete and well-executed renovations can significantly enhance your home’s value and your enjoyment of your home, providing compelling reasons to continue with home improvements despite the current challenges.

The decision to proceed with home improvements should balance current circumstances, your financial situation, and long-term property goals.

Prioritized Home Improvements That Will Increase Your Home’s Value

Increased home value over time

Certain home improvement projects are just not worth delaying. You can significantly enhance your home’s appeal, safety, and value by prioritizing key spaces in your home. Here are some areas to consider:

Kitchens: Long considered the heart of the home, your kitchen provides an excellent opportunity to merge traditional functionality with modern technology while also supporting social interaction. For example, an open-plan kitchen designed for multiple cooks helps make meal prep a social activity, whether with family or visiting guests. Such designs also enhance efficiency and create an inviting space where conversations can continue to flow. Intelligently-planned storage solutions – including custom cabinetry and walk-in pantries – help to eliminate clutter and ensure your kitchen looks clean, sleek, and organized.

Bathrooms: Elegant, sophisticated, and luxurious spa-like bathrooms are becoming the gold standard in modern home design. The tranquility of a beautiful bathroom enhances physical and mental well-being. Upgrading your bathroom along Universal Design principles with high-quality fixtures, advanced shower systems, and luxurious materials can create this calming personal retreat, offering everyday indulgence within your own home. Like with the kitchen, thoughtfully designed bathroom storage features will keep the space clutter-free while adding to the serene ambiance. Better still, an upgraded bathroom is one of the best ways to increase your home’s value.

Basements: Another area where you can increase value and your home’s usability is utilizing your basement space more effectively. A well-designed and finished basement can serve multiple functions, including that of a home gym, media room, recreation room, home office, or even as an additional bedroom. With the addition of extra windows and doors – some of which are mandatory for safety reasons – your basement can become a bright and inviting space for the entire household.

Additions: With the ongoing housing shortage in Madison, home additions can provide a practical solution to space constraints while adding function and value. Popular additions in Wisconsin include additional floors, new sunrooms, extended kitchens, and expanded primary suites. Such additions help you cater to your family’s changing lifestyle needs while at the same time reducing pressure to move elsewhere. Plus, they can considerably boost your property’s value.

So you see how different lifestyle improvements can significantly enhance your home and make it an even more enjoyable place to live. But with so many great options, figuring out what to prioritize can be tricky. That’s not a problem. Our design-build experts are more than happy to discuss how the above opportunities might apply to your Madison property.

How to Create a Safer, Healthier Madison, WI Home https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/how-to-create-a-safer-healthier-madison-wi-home/ https://sweeneydesign.com/blog/how-to-create-a-safer-healthier-madison-wi-home/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2023 05:13:09 +0000 https://sweeneydesign.com/?p=6674 As we honor National Safety Month, it’s crucial to consider the safety and health of our Madison, WI homes. At Sweeney Design Remodel, we believe that creating a safe, comfortable living space goes hand in hand with aesthetic appeal.

This article looks at practical ways to bolster your home’s safety, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. We explore universal design principles and aging-in-place techniques that will ensure your remodel looks fantastic and serves as a safe place for your entire household.

Common Causes of Home Accidents

Home accidents are responsible for millions of medically consulted injuries every year in the United States. In 2021, there were 29,100 deaths from falls alone, with more people losing their lives due to cuts, burns, poisoning, and suffocation.

Accidents in the home affect people of all ages and are particularly prevalent among adults 75 years and older. A closer look at the data reveals that many of these accidents stem from avoidable causes.

The leading causes include:

Poor Lighting & Messy HomePoor Lighting

Low light conditions and broken lights significantly increase the risk of serious accidents such as falls, slips, trips, and brain or spinal cord injuries. Proper lighting is a simple but essential step towards a safer home.

Poor Housekeeping

Negligence in home maintenance and cleaning can inadvertently set the stage for accidents. Broken flooring, improperly stored household equipment, and clutter can lead to serious injury. By maintaining a clean and organized environment, you reduce the risk of accidents occurring.

Slippery Surfaces

Spills on walking surfaces, unattended wet floors, and even weather conditions like ice and snow can contribute to slips and falls. Consistent cleaning, clearing, and drying of floors and careful placement of rugs and mats can prevent serious falls.

Hot stove with child reaching for potLack of Child Proofing

Children are particularly vulnerable to home accidents, especially when household hazards like sharp objects, hot stoves, or unsteady furniture are within reach. Parents should always ensure they child-proof their homes as efficiently as possible.

Poor Air Quality

Environmental factors such as air pollution, toxic fumes, or hazardous particulates can trigger a variety of medical emergencies, including suffocation, poisoning, and cardiac attacks. Therefore, regular checks of home ventilation and air conditioning systems are imperative, as are careful storage and handling of hazardous materials.

Key Ways to Prevent Home Accidents

Preventing home accidents is about proactively identifying and addressing potential hazards. You can best achieve this during a remodeling process, where design and features are chosen based on their level of safety and security.

Here are some key ways to prevent accidents within your home:

Identify Potential Causes of Falls

Regularly inspect your home for potential hazards that might trip someone up, such as frayed floor carpets, power cords, lamp stands, wobbly furniture, and protruding cupboards. Ensure these items are carefully stored, organized, maintained, and optimally placed within the space.

Install handholds along your walls, particularly if you or any family members are seniors. Ensure rugs and carpets are firmly secured. Simple organization can also help, such as storing books and shoes in designated places and hiding cords from main access routes.

Mitigate Fire and Electrocution Risks

Too Many Wires, Home Hazard

Fire hazards can arise from overloaded electrical outlets, faulty wiring, and poor cooking safety, among other things. Mitigate these risks using quality electrical components, ensuring appliances are turned off when not in use, and never leaving open flames unattended.

When it comes to preventing burns and electrocution, practical guidelines include the following:

Burn Prevention

  • Cooking Caution: Always stay alert while frying or cooking, and avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing around open flames.
  • Keep Fire Sources Secured: Matches and lighters can be dangerous in children’s hands. Ensure these items are stored securely and out of reach.
  • Water Heater Settings: Lower the temperature of your water heater to a ‘low-medium’ setting to prevent accidental scalds.
  • Safe Pot Handling: Turn pot handles inward while cooking. This precaution reduces the risk of children pulling down pots containing hot substances, which could cause severe burns.

Electrocution Prevention

  • Update Extension Cords: Worn-out extension cords can pose a risk. Replace these promptly.
  • Child-Proof Outlets: Use safety covers on all electrical outlets if small children are in your home.
  • Avoid Water: Keep electrical appliances away from water or wet surfaces to prevent shocks.
  • Avoid Overloading: Overloading outlets can lead to fires, especially in older homes with outdated electrical systems. Try to distribute your electrical usage evenly.
  • Handle Portable Heaters Carefully: Portable electric heaters can be dangerous in the presence of water and flammable items. Ensure they are used and stored appropriately.

Smoke Detector

Smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in every room, and a fire escape plan should be prepared and made familiar to all household members, especially children.

Poisoning is actually the leading cause of death in the residential environment. It’s therefore critical to mitigate this risk as well.

Smart Storage for Toxic Substances

  • Child Proof, Locked CabinetsLock Away Hazardous Chemicals: Store all harmful household chemicals, including cleaning supplies and pesticides, in a locked cabinet, out of reach of children.
  • Secure Dishwasher Pods: Dishwasher soap pods can be alluring to kids due to their colorful appearances. Always store them in a place where children cannot access them.
  • Avoid Mixing Chemicals: Combining different chemicals might unintentionally produce toxic gases. Always use them separately and follow the instructions on their labels.
  • Access to Poison Control: Display the Poison Control number visibly near your phone or save it on your mobile device for easy access during emergencies.
  • Supervision During Cleaning: Never leave children unattended when you’re using household cleaners. Even a momentary distraction, like answering the door, can lead to accidents.

These safety measures will significantly reduce the risk of serious injuries and costly property damage, ultimately creating a safer living environment for your family.

Ways to Design Safer Kitchens and Bathrooms

Most accidents in the home occur in either the kitchen or the bathroom. When planning a remodel, it’s always sensible to incorporate Universal Design and Aging-In-Place principles.

These principles focus on creating safe and accessible spaces for people of all ages and abilities. By designing your home around these principles, you can ensure a comfortable and supportive environment for your entire family and increase your home’s resale value.

Here are some ways to achieve this:

Design Considerations for Safer Kitchens

Kitchen Side View

Wide aisles and spaces: Opt for wide aisles and an open layout kitchen for improved movement. This allows for easy access, especially when multiple generations are in the kitchen simultaneously, or if mobility aids are required.

Accessible features: Install lower cabinets with easy-to-grip handles and pull-out shelves, enhancing accessibility and safety. If feasible, include some knee space under countertops for wheelchair users. In addition, consider smart appliances, which can alert you if left on or reaching a dangerous temperature.

Touch-free fixtures: Lever or touch-free faucets, along with modified countertop heights, can cater to people of different sizes and physical abilities. These adjustments help individuals with smaller or arthritic hands operate fixtures with ease.

Safe lighting: Prioritize layered lighting designs that enhance visibility. Include task and ambient lighting, supplemented with soft lighting in under cabinets and along the toe kicks.

Design Considerations for Safer Bathrooms

ADA Compliant Bathroom

Accessible bathroom layout: Consider a full bathroom on the first floor with a door that slides or swings out, making it more accessible for those with limited mobility. Space is crucial, so enlarging the bathroom for comfortable movement might be necessary.

Shower safety: Prioritizing safety in showers is vital. Consider barrier-free entries for easy access and hand-held showerheads for better control. Install grab bars for added support and safety, and include bench seats for those needing to sit during showers.

Slip-resistant flooring: Opt for textured tiles, wooden floors, or mosaic tiles with wide grout lines for better grip. Minimize the use of rugs to avoid tripping hazards.

Toilet and tub safety: Install comfortable toilets and grab bars for easy use. Walk-in tubs or curbless showers are excellent choices for people with mobility challenges. Adding anti-scald valves and built-in benches enhances safety and convenience.

Your trusted design-build team will provide you with complete guidance and advice on these issues.
